9. The fairground square.
This square was called « PLACE DE BRENERY » Before 1789, 3 important fairs took place : Saint-Paul fair on January 25 th, Saint-George fair on april 28 th and Saint-Barthélémy fair on August 23 rd and 24 th. The 1792 national convention suppressed the Saint-Paul and Saint-George fairs to keep only the 23 rd and 24 th fair giving it another name. A royal decision authorized the Saint-George fair again in 1819. On november 4th 1910, the city council decided the building of a booth and the installation of a public scale. It all cost 790.99 francs at the time. Between Saint George and Azy roads, you can admire the wonderful Celtic cross and just opposite an impressive building with a blind front called « Maison Forte ». Just under it there is a cellar with more than 5 metre thick walls. It was used as a jail during the revolution time.
