12 - L'école des filles

    12. The girls school.

In France at the end of th 19th century, big efforts were made to build primary schools. On may 5 th 1898, the Saint-Parize-Le- Châtel municipality sold the « FONTS BOUILLANTS » spring to a private owner in order to buy a ground and build the girls school. The school we can see in front of us was inaugurated on may 28th 1899 in the presence of Mr George BOURRE who was the mayor at that time. The first schoolmistress, Mrs Marie- Julia GAUTHEREAU was appointed on july 12th 1899. As a consequence to the Jules FERRY’s laws in 1881 and 1882, girls got the same rights as boys to be educated. As it was not allowed for girls and boys to be mixed, there was a school for each. On january 12th, 23 girls attended school in the village. In the front there is the mistress’s lodging ; next to it there is the classroom on the courtyard. The last schoolmistress was Mrs LIMOUSIN.

The girls school closed in 1980.
